4D Ultrasound (also known as 3D/4D Ultrasound) is the most advanced technology used by sonographers used to evaluate multiple conditions to evaluate and view an unborn baby. 4D ultrasound is the process of streaming 3D images into live video. The 3D/4D ultrasound imaging should utilize ultrasound energy subject to the same limits as conventional (2D) ultrasound to create the Three- and Four-Dimensional images.

3D ultrasound is an upgrade to the old 2D process where high frequeny sound waves were reflected or mirrored back creating an image. The new 3d / 4d process allows the same waves to be viewed from multiple angles. These waves are reflected back and captured, providing very detailed 3-dimensional images of the fetus including its hair, lips, eyes, nose, and other facial features.
